Step 5: Teamwork = Team

Perfecting your Performance In Your Life and Business Forever!

Last month I shared the fourth step in the Perfect Performance Success System with you, Play Book.

This month we are focusing on Step 5: Teamwork.

Every high achieving athlete, whether they are an individual athlete or a member of a team has a support team that helps them achieve their ultimate objective.

Step 5: Teamwork is where you pick your team. This is an important decision because these individuals are going to become an integral part of facilitating your success.

Your teammates are going to help you accomplish your desired outcome.

Under the reign of coach John Wooden the UCLA Bruins won an unprecedented 10 national championships from 1963-1975.  In that period of time they had four undefeated seasons as well.

A remarkable feat considering the closest school to matching 10 national titles comes from Kentucky who has only 7 over a 50-year period.  How was coach Wooden able to create such consistent success in such a short period of time?

Its simple, he attributes their success to his ability to create a team by developing boys into men.  Each and every day Coach Wooden would instill a spirit of selflessness and teamwork into all of his players.  "Always think of passing the ball before shooting it," he would tell them.

In preparing to play another team.  He wouldn't break down film of the other team or worry about their key players.  No he continued to focus on his team and what they needed to do in order to get better each and every day.  To play the kind of basketball that he knew they were capable of playing.

Each and every player on the team had an integral part in creating the unstoppable Bruins.   Even the individuals that sat on the bench contributed to creating this success.  They were involved in pushing the starters to a higher level by competing against them during practice.

Since he retired, Wooden gave us some insight into his secret when he stated: "I haven't missed the games; I haven't missed the tournaments," he says. "I've missed the daily practices, because that's where you got to know your players and got the chance to establish rapport that you hoped would be lasting."

And it's the development of this friendship within each individual that has lead to such strong teams over the years.

You too can develop a team mentality.  Take the time to get to know who's on your team and help them get to know each other.
