Step 7: Practice = Focus

Perfecting your Performance In Your Life and Business Forever!

Last month I shared the sixth step in the Perfect Performance Success System with you, Teamwork.  

This month we are focusing on Step 7: Practice.

Every coach understands the importance of practice.  It's a fundamental part of your ultimate performance.  Through repetition, technique becomes foundational to developing great skill.  And skill repeated consistently creates capability.  And it's this ability that is used to help facilitate making plays during competition.

Step 7, Practice, is where repetition occurs.  And it is through focus that proper execution, concentration, and commitment takes place.

Baseball players understand focus and practice well.  

That's why they take batting practice.  Although there are as many different swings as there are players in the league.  There are really only a handful of proven swing techniques that works.   

It is the intention of the players to use a specific technique to create a consistent swing that works for them.  Their batting coaches help accomplish this by reinforcing their specific technique during batting practice.  Over time and through consistent repetition this technique becomes a skill.  

So over time we see players ability to hit the ball improve.  By taking this skill and using it during practice and competitions they increase their capability to hit the ball.  This is a key part of skill acquisition and is directly related to your ability to focus your time, energy and effort onto the task at hand.

By repeating this process over and over they are perfecting their "swing" motor pattern. They enhance their capacity to perform this effort, improve their coordination, and as a result they are able to produce a desired outcome with seemingly no effort.

That's the mark of someone who has mastered a technique!  So choose the technique you want to develop wisely.  Then use properly executed practice to perfect it.

Define what is important to you.  Believe you can do it.  Lay out the steps to get there and do it over and over again until you have perfected the action.  This consistency will pay huge dividends in the future.
